The short answer is our Malviya Nagar centre, because we do not have a centre in Defence Colony. Nothing is booked until you have had a free 15-minute intake call, which is with a clinician rather than a receptionist.

Which eMbrace centre Defence Colony families use

Our closest centre to Defence Colony is in Malviya Nagar, at FC-29, Plot No. 5, Geetanjali, beside Malviya Nagar Metro Station Gate No. 1. We have no centre in Defence Colony, and it is a drive of some length, not a hop.

From Defence Colony, Jangpura and Lajpat Nagar the road route runs via Ring Road and Press Enclave Marg. On the metro it is a Violet Line to Yellow Line change at Central Secretariat or Hauz Khas depending on where you start, so most families in this catchment drive.

For families where the travel is the obstacle rather than the appointment, we run sessions online, and a good deal of child psychology work, particularly parent-facing sessions, does not lose anything in that format.

Worth knowing before you plan the journey: seeing a child psychologist starts as a small number of appointments, not a standing weekly commitment. The consultation, the parent history and the feedback session are usually three visits over a few weeks. Whether anything follows, and how often, is decided at the feedback session with you rather than assumed at the start.

For parking, the nearest drop-off point and the quickest route at your particular time of day, ask on the intake call. Traffic and parking around every one of these centres change enough through the day that current directions from someone who works there beat anything we could fix on a web page.

When a child psychologist is the right call

Most of what worries parents is developmentally ordinary and passes. What separates the two is not how bad the behaviour looks on its worst day, but whether it has persisted, whether it shows up in more than one setting, and whether it has started to get in the way of ordinary life.

  • The same difficulty at home and at school, rather than in only one place
  • A change that has lasted more than a few weeks and is not shifting
  • Anxiety that has started to shrink what your child will attempt
  • Any talk of self-harm, at any age, which warrants an appointment the same week

The longer version, including the signs that usually do not need a psychologist at all, is on our child psychology hub.

What happens at your first appointment

The first appointment is a consultation, not a test. Nothing is diagnosed on day one. You start with the free 15-minute intake call, then a parent history session usually without your child present, then a session with your child pitched to their age, then a feedback session where you get the formulation in plain language, a written summary and a plan with a review point in it.

Bring school reports and any previous assessment. If a class teacher or school counsellor knows your child well, their observations are often the single most useful thing you can bring.

What we see most often

From Defence Colony, Jangpura and Lajpat Nagar the most common referral reasons are anxiety and low mood in secondary-age children, and behaviour difficulties in younger ones that have become entrenched over a year or more. Families in this catchment frequently come after trying a school counsellor first, which is a sensible order and means we are usually picking up where somebody else has already made a start.

Given the journey, a fair number of Defence Colony families run the parent-facing sessions online and come in only for the sessions with the child.

Who you would see at our Malviya Nagar centre

Dr Supriya Malik, Founder and CEO, and Head of the Child Development Centre at Rainbow

PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of Birmingham, where she was also a postdoctoral researcher, and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society in the UK. She designed the assessment and therapy pathways every eMbrace centre runs.

At our Malviya Nagar centre, the clinicians who take this work are:

Taranpreet Kaur, Clinical Psychologist

M.Phil in Clinical Psychology with distinction, plus a Post Graduate Diploma in School Counselling from Symbiosis. ACT and MBCT for anxiety, depression, OCD and trauma, and comprehensive psychological assessment. Works in English, Hindi and Punjabi.

Cheesha Kanwar, Psychologist

Completing an MSc in Clinical Psychology at Christ (Deemed to be University), with a BA (Hons) in Applied Psychology from the University of Delhi. Behaviour therapy and assessment support using WISC-V, NEPSY-II, Conners-3 and BRIEF-2. Works in English and Hindi.

Which of them you see is decided on the intake call rather than by whoever has the next free slot, and you are told who it will be before you book. Fuller biographies are on our about page.

Schools and services we already work with

Some of what we do around Defence Colony happens inside institutions rather than at a centre, which is often how a family first hears of us.

Our Malviya Nagar centre runs inside Rainbow Children's Hospital, New Delhi, which is why occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, behaviour therapy and special education sit in the same building as assessment.

Where a child or adult needs psychiatric input, we work with Sukoon across Delhi NCR for psychiatric assessment, consultation and medication management, so you are not left to find a psychiatrist yourself.

Fees and timelines

Fees are quoted upfront on your intake call, before anything is booked. We do not publish a number because it depends on which clinician you see and what the work involves, and a figure on a web page would be a guess at your situation rather than a price for it.

A therapy course is reviewed formally at around session six, and we would expect you to be seeing some change by then. If you are not, that is a reason to change the plan rather than persist with it.
